The term paranormal is a compound of the words para (beyond or outside) and normal. By definition it implies that anything described by this word does not come within what is known, as the normal understanding humans possess. However, this is a very simplistic definition. Similar to words such as metaphysical and supernatural, the term paranormal is not open to a clear and precise definition because there is no universal consensus on what the phenomenon is or what it implies. Unlike something like gravity, that has a precise definition and associated qualities that make it less confusing, paranormal does not offer such a simple viewpoint.
Just to get a wide range of topics that various belief believe come under the broad scope of paranormal consider the following: ghosts, Loch Ness Monster, UFOs, Bermuda Triangle, and so on. You will observe that the list include spirits of people who are no longer alive, a physical location on the planet, an animal that is reported by never witnessed when looked for, and aliens. Due to the religious beliefs of human beings, they are more taken with the paranormal in the ghost bit rather than the UFO part because this represents an opportunity to somehow get in touch with a world that is out of reach while being right beside us.
We all have to die in the physical sense. That is, our body will someday stop working and cease all functions. Some people are of the opinion that the whole business of spirits is just a way to pacify the fears of death being the ultimate end to all existence. Without going in an argument against that, it must be noted that those who do sincerely believe that there is more to our life than just the physical span associated with a living body, such people find deep peace through their beliefs. Another controversial aspect to this viewpoint is that the beliefs are more important to those people who apparently suffer more than others for no reason.
While there has been much exposure through television and other mediums regarding spirits and their deeds, which are often witnessed as physical movement without cause, like a door opening by itself or vessels falling off tables, to floating lights, and foggy or blurred images of what looks like a human form. Whether one believes in such things to be spirits or not comes down to faith, just like belief in god. The scientific community of course completely dismisses this all as fantasy and make-believe because nothing has ever been witnessed in a scientific manner and the whole situation is suspicious because it seems these spirits are deliberately avoiding being studied in a scientific manner.
This further confuses the issue because if the paranormal is consistently witnessed in something like, say a haunted house, then where does it all go when there are people with cameras and recording equipment sitting in the house on the night of expected activity? Since the paranormal is, by definition, beyond normal, then how does anyone truly understand what it means and how it affects us?
Psychics are people who are known to possess an uncanny ability that permits them to foresee, sense, and feel things that are not visible or felt by regular people. There are many phrases that are used to explain such ability. One such phrase says that psychics are gifted with extra sensory perception (ESP), which means that they can have the capacity to feel and known things beyond the regular five senses that are provided to all human beings (sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste). ESP is also referred to as the sixth sense sometimes. Another such term is Psi, which implies "mind and the unknown", that is primarily believed to be responsible for the sensations received from paranormal sources. Psychic capability is also a part of the tenets of parapsychology that is a study of paranormal.
Strictly speaking, nearly every human being has some psychic ability though of course, the use of them is more pronounced in a select few. When you consider something like intuition it becomes obvious that there are certain aspects to the mind that are not open to regular patterns of thought that can be associated with real world events. Intuition has no basis in reality; your mind just insists you follow some decision that eventually turns out to be true. This is a very minor, common, and simple example of limited psychic ability, or the power of the mind to reach beyond the physical. Psychics are apparently gifted with minds that can literally talk across long distances without telephones, hear things that are never spoken, and they can through some kind of heightened intuition, see into the future.
Automatic writing is writing that does not involve any conscious thinking on the part of the writer. In other words, the conscious mind of the writer is not dictating what must be written. Psychics also claim to write under the influence of unknown energies. Similarly, channeling is another way in which they can receive messages from paranormal sources.
Clairsentience is feeling awareness for events that may be in the present, past, or future while clairaudience is hearing or perceiving aural signals that are cannot be heard by anyone else. Both are sub-forms of clairvoyance that is a full fledged example of ESP and through which the psychic can perceive events without involving the 5 senses mentioned earlier.
Divination is a psychic ability that allows the psychic to make predictions or prophecies.
The ability to know about an object or another human being through mere physical contact is known as psychometrics. Pyschokinesis is the ability to move objects by thinking alone.
Remote viewing enables psychics to see and describe things and situations without actually, physically seeing them. The events being described could be hundreds of miles away. Telepathy is defined as the ability to talk to other people through mental contact alone as well as reading thoughts of others.
Psychics often begin by relying heavily on intuition and then developing that portion of their mind to increase its awareness of events that are only perceivable through extra sensory perception. This is known as tuning into the universal mind.
There are many test, offline and on the Internet, that anyone can take to test their own psychic abilities.
